Help in GP

There are a few ways to improve in the area of GP.

Besides the usual advice given by almost everybody, that is to read as widely as possible the newspapers, other economic or business-related magazines, current issues that are on the internet (eg CNN and BBC websites), there is another good way.

One can choose an area or two that one is interested in, eg climate change or nuclear proliferation or conflicts between nations or poverty or rise in power (economic and military) of certain nations, and specialize in them.

Do in-depth research into these areas. List in point forms the important points.

Practise constructing sentences, from several points of views, using these key points.

Very soon, you will be a champion.

General Paper : How To Do Well

This subject is actually rather challenging for a 17 or 18 or 19 year old person. Even if a person who is in his/her 20s were to attempt some of the questions, it would still be difficult.

GP requires the student to have a matured and exposed mind and not be too-emotional as well. This is a tall order for a teenager, but it is not impossible to instill in them maturity and objectivity.

As with most things in life, people, and in this case, students just need some time to get adjusted to a new way of doing and thinking about things.

GP Comprehension

For this other part of the GP exam, students will need to know what the authors of the passages are trying to say or what the authors really mean?

The opinions of the authors will need to be understood. Competent re-phrasing of sentences to illustrate understanding of the passages is also essential.

Some students find this part of the exam difficult because they may not have been exposed to many life events and thus are not sensitive enough to fully understand the opinions and meanings of the passages. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that these students are incapable of discerning the opinions and thoughts of the authors but rather, these students may need guidance on how to tackle these questions. There are ways to do this right.

It depends on a combination of exposure to life events, knowledge of current issues, sensitivity to people's words and language used, above-average English standards, and refraining from jumping to conclusions based on a few words in the passages.

Hey students, please feel free to leave comments in the comments section, I hope that this blog can be an interactive forum between you guys/girls and myself. Thanks.

GP Essays

There is a choice of 12 essay questions for the GP exam. To be able to answer them well, one will need to have the following:

1. An adequate level of English writing standard to express himself/herself well;

2. A certain level of maturity in terms of thinking so as not to be overly emotional in writing;

3. A broad understanding of world and current issues, eg climate change, the economy, international terrorism, infectious diseases, politics, scientific discoveries, religion, history, conflict between nations etc;

4. A keen interest in the above (ie pt 3);

5. An ability to organise one's thoughts and present them in an orderly manner to lead the reader/marker/examiner through the flow of the essay and the various points of argument;

6. An ability to capture the reader's/marker's/examiner's attention by injecting creative thoughts and/or humour;

7. A cool attitude.

General Paper

General Paper (GP) is a subject that is taken at A-Levels by Junior College (JC), Centralised Institute (CI) and Private students.

Some people would classify this subject as English at A-Levels since there isn't an English subject at this level, but I beg to differ. In my opinion, GP is about English only to a certain extent as students require a basic standard of English in order to write and comprehend stuff that they will come into contact with.

Most students will have acquired the basic level of English at Primary and Secondary Schools so GP is an advanced level of English that has to be combined with a broad understanding of current issues around the world and good and effective comprehension skills.

As I am highly interested in current affairs, I will like to blog about this subject and hopfully provide assistance to A-Level students who are embarking on their 2 or 3 year journey along this path.
