Gender Issues

In most parts of the world, women are seen rising to the ranks of men in many aspects of life. There are, however, still top positions in organisations that do not see that many women. Do women slow down in their careers because of family issues such as marriage and child-bearing etc? Or are they just being thought of as 'not as good' as the men, resulting in fewer women climing up high on the corporate ladder. To put it directly, is it due to choice that women are not doing as well as men in terms of occupying the top positions in organisations or are they left behind because of gender inequality at the workplace?

A GP Topic: Gender Issues

In many parts of the world, women are seeking gender equality at workplaces, sporting events, in relationships etc.

In your view, do you think that gender equality can ever be achieved?

Germany To Play Key Role In Greek Bailout?

Germany, an economic powerhouse in Europe, could play a key role in the bailout of Greece's debts. Tough measures will however have to be accepted by Greece should the bailout package be offered.

EU-IMF Bailout For Greece?

Greece is seeking the EU and IMF's help in bailing out its huge debt. A EU-IMF loan package could be offered to Greece. Europe is being hit by 2 major 'events' this couple of weeks, the Icelandic Ash and now this. To say that the opportunity costs associated with these 2 problems are large is surely an understatement. Alot of time, money, effort have been lost and wasted just trying to solve these 2 problems.

GP Question - Cont .....

Should wealth be our no 1 priority? Well, that really depends on the individual. Some people regard wealth as the top aim in life, where without it, there can never be happiness.

Others regard various other issues as more important than wealth or perhaps just as important as wealth.

Those other areas that people are concerned about would be (non-exhaustive):
- Religion
- Health
- Family
- Friends
- Relaxation: Time to smell the roses and listen to the birds
- Career choice based on their personal interests and not based on monetary rewards
- Ethics: Doing business in an ethical manner means more to them than monetary gains
- etc etc

One can choose to answer this question supporting wealth as the no 1 priority or one can choose to talk about the other more or equally important things in life.

To do well, one has to:
- use good, strong, clear, concise, yet easily understandable English to express opinions
- have strong arguments to back one's points
- bring in real-life examples as illustrations
- direct the flow of the essay to ensure that it is smooth, from start to end
- enable the introduction and conclusion to do their jobs of actually introducing what the essay is about and where it is leading to, and to conclude and wrap up the main points and arguments and have at least some form of closure.

Volcanic Ash

Iceland's Volcanic Ash is causing mayhem across Europe (directly) and many other parts of the world (indirectly).

Aircrafts are unable to operate as visibility over many parts of Europe is severly affected. Passengers are stranded all over Europe and many parts of the world as flights are cancelled.

Read all about it.

This is what Nature can do to the world and its people.

One of my students gave his view that beauty products and treatments are indeed over-publicised. They are not very helpful in improving people's physical attributes.

The advertisements are exaggerated in the claims that they make.

Q: Are Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) the trend these days for business setups? Are SMEs better business concepts compared with larger companies?

If your answer is yes, then

Points:
- Brief Definition of SMEs
- Describe how SMEs function
- Ease of formation
- Touch on the decision-making process of SMEs, ie faster and quicker, efficient response to business deals
- Explain that SMEs now employ more than 50% of Spore's workforce
- SMEs also contribute alot to the GDP of Spore, should be also >50%
- Government is also supporting SMEs more by offering more grants (eg low-interest loans), tax rebates, employee salary contributions etc.

Briefly talk about the pitfalls of large organisations too. Eg redtape, too much 'fat' or unnecessary resources like manpower lying around, exorbitant costs (eg high rents) involved.

Q: Do you think Sport is now too closely linked to money?

Points:

It is most definitely. One only needs to compare the salary that sportsmen, in the past (eg in the 70s and 80s) and the present, are earning to understand the huge difference.

Real-life examples could be brought in to support the claim. Examples such as what the EPL footballers are earning nowadays tell a significant story. An average footballer earns $50,000 pounds a week, while the more popular ones get more than $100,000 pounds a week. It is similar in the Italian and Spanish Leagues. Even the arguably smaller leagues like the German and French Leagues pay close to those figures too.

Other examples include what the golfers and tennis players etc are earning. Compare them with players from the past.

TV and advertising rights are pushing the numbers even higher.

Examine the pros and cons associated with sport being linked to money. Does it serve as a motivation for young people to carve a career for themselves in this area? Will it bring the best to sport? Will it bring out the best in sport? Will it enable sport standards to increase? Does it destroy the passion for the sport?

Discuss your standpoint and come to a conclusion about what you think and feel about this issue.

GP Topic : Terrorism

The recent bomb attacks on Moscow's subway system has made headlines around the world.

Yet again, the so-called terrorists are taking action for the wrongs they feel certain people/government/nations did or are doing to them and their people.

Nations trying to control terrorism should examine their own actions and seek peaceful negotiations with the so-called terrorists. One has to understand what it is that is making them so angry that they want to sacrifice their own lives to destroy more lives. No use using violence to counter terrorism, it will just backfire and lead to more anger and hatred.

Peaceful talks with a give and take attitude is the way to go. Once either party becomes selfish, the whole thing will fall apart.
