South Africa's crime rate is high and this is an understatement to say the least. Personally, I have even spoken with a South African couple on a flight from Singapore to Australia a number of year ago about this issue and they told me that they do not feel safe at all in their own country. According to them, people get robbed in broad daylight, it could happen at a traffic light junction where men approach stationary vehicles and rob them or it could happen at a supermarket where armed and dangerous robbers rob the check out counters (cashiers).
People live in fear and their houses are usually fenced up high, some even with electricity connected to the fence and they keep big dogs to ''scare'' away burglars and home invaders. Several people also keep guns at home for self protection.
This year South Africa hosts the World Cup and it kicks off today. There are already reports of tourists, football fans, journalists who were robbed.
Overall security in South Africa is poor and most people live in fear.
