GP Question

Q: 'Being Well Travelled Is One Of The Main Pre-Requisites Of Being Considered Educated'. To What Extent Do You Agree?

Thursday, July 29, 2010

GP Tutor : People Are Usually Selfish And Have Double Standards.

Most people are selfish. This is human nature. People only care for themselves and would act in a manner that benefit themselves most. There are no two ways about that. Sad but true.

Let's look at an example, Human A cries foul when Human B back stabs Human A for a promotion. Some time into the future, Human A sees an opportunity to back stab Human C to gain a promotion which brings with it a 20% pay increase, better benefits, bigger bonuses. Do you think Human A will stop himself from 'eating the cake' placed infront of him/her?

Let's look at another example. Human Z sits in a common reading room which says that shoes have to be removed. Human Z removes his/her shoes, but Human Y does not. Human Z tells Human Y to remove his/her shoes as it is part of the reading room rules. Human Z is doing this because he/she has removed his/her shoes so he/she feels that others should do likewise. Sometime into the future, Human Z walks his/her dog downstairs the apartment park and passes the swimming pool with his/her dog. The pool rules state that pets are not allowed near the water. Do you think Human Z will obey this pool rule?

Artists Require Courage

People who pursue their dreams such as being an art-painter, musician, drama artist etc have alot of courage especially in a country like Singapore where most people feel that a more practical and realistic path to success in life is to study hard and get a degree before embarking on a career in medicine, law, air-transport, engineering, banking, civil service etc.

Anyone who pursues their dreams, even in the area of starting and running a small business, is an artist. (in my opinion) This is because he/she has the courage to choose an unconventional path that could possibly result in a career that does not reward them very much financially.

Having said that, if done well and with some help from above, one can excel in the least likely of scenarios.

General Paper Topic : The Arts

Most students would shy away from this topic area as it is just not the normal A Level student's cup of tea.

This is indeed a deep subject/topic. It involves understanding and appreciating the meanings of music, literature, language, paintings, films, dramas, dance etc.

How the above examples impact our society? How they influence the way people think and lead lives? How people use them as a means to communicate and express their deepest thoughts/feelings? How much attention or budget should the government devote to the Arts? How useful are these in a modern and advanced society like ours? The list goes on.

How To Improve Your GP Grades

For Paper 1:
- Choose the essay question (out of the 12) that you are most interested in. An interest for the topic will definitely spur you on in your writing.
- With sufficient preparation, you should be able to ace it if you know how to use proper English to air your views and put forward your arguments in an organised and structured manner, breaking your essay into intro, body and conclusion.
- Relevant real life examples need to be provided to support each point/argument that you raise (or at least for most of your points/arguments), followed by an evaluation of the point/argument and its consequences/implications.

I will discuss Paper 2 in my next post. Stay tuned. Thanks.

GP: Content or English?

Some students struggle with Content, while others find that their English standards do not fit the requirements.

There are also some who feel that they cannot cope with both the Content and English expectations placed upon them by the General Paper Exams.

What do you think is your main problem area?

Number of Marriages Down In Singapore

People fear marriage not only because of the lifetime commitment factor but also because of the ''to do'' list in preparation for the big day. This ''to do'' list is getting larger these days and some are put off by it.

Please read. http://www.todayonline.com/Columns/EDC100710-0000039/I-do-seems-easier-than-to-do

Is Altruism Still Alive In This Age?

If your answer is a big ''No'', then the below are some points:

- Is Selflessness still alive?

- People nowadays are so busy that they forget about this virtue.

- In our pursuit of economic success and independence, we have somehow left ''selflessness'' behind.

- Difficult to find people offering help to others without expecting something in return.

- Even some people who do charity work are only doing it for their own personal reasons, perhaps to help their children gain admission into a top primary school.

- The NKF saga (from a few years back) shows that certain people within the charity circle are also untrustworthy.

- Some countries that offer aid to others, do it for the sake of scoring monetary or economic points (either domestically or internationally). Some have a hidden agenda behind all the ''good'' that they do.

Of course you could choose to defend the case by saying that altruism is well and truly alive in this age. You would need to work very hard to argue your points and give relevant examples to make your essay convincing.

GP Question

Has The Modern Age Made Us More Lonely?

- Touch on what the modern age entails. Compare briefly with ''the not so modern age'' (years back).

- Explain the boundaries (in terms of what you are writing) of what loneliness mean.

Yes, to the Question:

- Busy/hectic lifestyles (students and working adults alike).

- Concerned with survival and making a living.

- Technological advancements on the one hand connect people, on the other hand, isolate people. People nowadays have cut down tremendously on meeting face to face, alot of these human interactions have been substituted by technology.

- More educated people, smaller world (globalized), wider opportunities, people are moving around alot compared to the past, moving inter-state or overseas, disruptive towards long term relationships.

- More emphasis (in terms of modern culture) placed on career, business, not on family and relationships.

- Statistics in the areas of modern family sizes, number of marriages, are moving south (going downwards), while the number of singles, smaller house dwellings such as studio apartments and one bedroom flats are on the rise.

Singaporeans Not United Enough?

Why do Singaporeans not help out when a crime occurs in public? My guess is that they:

- are too tired

- are too busy

- dont wanna get into trouble themselves

- dont wanna get involved in time-consuming police statements and court attendance

- just like to watch the ''show''

- dont care

- have no incentive to help

The list goes on.

GP Topic

Q: Does Adversity Bring Out The Best In People?

Adversity = something along the lines of hardship.

Some people need adversity to push or spur them onto success and better things. If you observe the lifestyle trends of most people, you would notice that those who are borned with a silver spoon normally do not achieve much because they already have everything. Cannot really blame them as there is no motivation for them to strive towards acheving more financially. However, you could argue that some of them would devote their time towards achieving other meaningful goals and objectives such as pursuing a just cause, protecting the environment or focusing on helping the poor and volunteering their time to provide assistance to the needy.

On the other hand, those people who were brought up in a low income environment would usually work hard towards achieving their goals of doing well in life. Studying hard and later working hard in their jobs and careers. To put it bluntly, they do not have much of a choice given their backgrounds.

Personally, I feel that adversity does bring out the best in people, although there are a number of alternate ways this essay could be argued.

Australia To Ban Super Thin Models

This new rule puts an end (at least in Australia) to huge problems that the media and fashion industry place on teenagers and youths. Some of these young people are obsessed with staying thin and have developed eating disorders.

Humans vs Animals

Are humans similar in nature to animals?

The main purpose of animal existence is to:

- hunt for survival,

- defend themselves and their territories,

- play with their own kind,

- mate and reproduce,

- protect and care for their young.

Do the above points sound familiar?
