Cab or Taxi Drivers

Why are people always complaining about cab or taxi drivers? Guess they are also under alot of pressure, driving the whole day and earning 'peanuts' as some of them would put it. So when they meet passengers who are 'nasty', some of them may just flare up and that usually leads to arguments between the 2 parties.

GP Help : Please Take Note

Students who want help in GP should play their part in having or at least learning to cultivate a keen interest in current or past issues/affairs too. Please note that GP is different from Maths, Science or Econs where there is a syllabus to follow. GP is more a discussion based subject where content marks are awarded for essays that show good depth in demonstrating strong knowledge of key current/past domestic, international and global issues. This strength can also be combined with passage(s) info to score well in the AQ for Paper II.

GP Topic Examples : YOG Boosts Singapore's Economy

Please read this article about the YOG contributing to Singapore's economy.

PS: Last night, I watched the Singapore YOG football team in action and I have to say that the boys impressed me very much.

They played attractive football and worked cohesively as a team to beat an European opponent 3-2.

Students, studying for the upcoming exams, can learn a thing or two from these young sportsmen, that is, never give up, strive hard, work hard, and you will be rewarded.

GP: Issue Regarding Sports and Sportsmanship

For those students who are keen on writing sports related GP essays, this one is for you.

This is a good example to bring in should you write about sports and the associated issues. This issue (Politics) easily ranks as one of the main issues affecting sports.

Please read. http://www.todayonline.com/Hotnews/EDC100816-0000117/Politics-vs-sports?

Other examples from the past include the Soviet Union boycotting the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, while the US boycotted the Moscow Olympics in 1980. These happened during the Cold War Era.

Good News From My GP Students

Case I: Student Has Been Under My Guidance For About 2 Months
A few days ago, I received an email from one of my students who is sitting for her GP A Levels this year.

She has slowly but surely improved on her essay writing skills and feels motivated to study harder for the upcoming exams.

Case II: Student Has Been Under My Guidance For About 1 Month
And today, I was informed by one of my JC1 students that he has finally managed to pass his essay exercise (done about once a month) given to him and marked by his JC GP teacher! He is overjoyed!

It is certainly very encouraging to hear of such good news.

Keep it up Guys and Girls!!!

GP Essay Question

Does Today's Society Place Too Much Emphasis On Paper Qualifications?

- Write about what paper qualifications mean or consist of.

- Write about parents these days putting pressure on their kids to do well at school. And priority is always given to their children's education. Much time, effort and money are spent to help their children gain the ''best'' education.

- Discuss the ''prestige'' a child receives when he/she does well at major exams and earns a good certificate from a reputable educational institution.

- Briefly talk about what the media emphasises on (as the media has such a large influence on society). The media would usually publish articles about a top student doing well in school and elaborate about his/her life. There may be interviews with top students about how they manage to juggle the pressures of school life and achieve what they have achieved etc etc. An average student very rarely gets into the media's spotlight.

- Touch on what paper qualifications can bring a person these days? The sort of pay one can expect and the position, eg a young graduate leading a team of seasoned and experienced staff with over 20 or even 30 years of on the job experience. And does it always turn out well? Can this young leader perform? Does he/she have the necessary skills to effectively lead? Talk about examples of how some young leaders have done well and how others have not and briefly evaluate the reasons behind the success or failure (eg as the young leader has been mainly burying himself/herself in books throughout his/her school life, he/she is not exposed enough to have the adequate practical skills). Just remember not to stray into the territory of over-writing about whether or not you think paper qualifications should be emphasised? This is because the question does not ask you ''what is your view''? or ''to what extent is this useful/beneficial''? Just need to let the reader know whether or not your essay is saying that ''too much emphasis is being placed.........'' or ''not much emphasis is being placed.......''

- Write a concluding paragraph.

Interesting ''Today'' Newspaper Articles Under The ''Voices'' Section

Even more people are feeling that their children are being graded under extremely rigid and inflexible marking systems.

Does This Happen To GP Students? I wonder.

How To Answer The AQ

This is the toughest part of GP according to most of my students.

Well, the trick lies in bringing in your own take, or your own opinion, while impressing the marker with fluent usage of relevant real life examples to support your argument.

It is not only about the info from the passage or passages, writing your stand with real life examples and then showing that you can evaluate what you have written will get you the marks!

GP Essay

Q: Do Humans Today Depend Too Much On Technology?

- Decades ago, there were no television sets, computers, dvd players in middle to lower income households.

- Nowadays, even low income families have these electrical gadgets.

- Decades back, children play games out in the open field. Football, badminton, marbles, you name it.

- These days, children largely indulge in video games, PC games etc. They do not go outdoors as much anymore.

- Decades before, students and office workers do not have computers, let alone the internet. They communicated with one another using mainly the face-to-face medium.

- Starting from this century, people have started to communicate with mobile phones, internet chats, emails etc. There are fewer opportunities for social face to face interactions amongst people.

The key points from the above are that people today depend too much on technology and may have lost alot of useful social skills such as communicating and interacting with others face to face.

If the technology that we are so reliant on, suddenly 'disappears' due to some unforseen circumstances (war, hacker activities, etc), humans may be left 'crippled' and not have the necessary skills to function properly.

GP Question

Should Sports Be Just About Winning? Which Is More Important? The Value Of Sports Or Winning?

This question can be answered in a no of ways.

Most students would most probably choose the stance that the value of sports is more important than winning. Remember, winning is but just a part, factor, element of the whole issue of sports.

There are so many other facets linked with sports and the value that each can create. The below examples are some.

- Sportmanship character that goes beyond the field or the court into workplaces in the future and into society in general.

- Team Bonding, Team Spirit, co-operation between team members, values that could make a person a more well-rounded individual.

- Builds stamina and strength and maintains good health (both physical and mental health) that goes a long way in assisting people to lead happy healthy lives and cope with the pressures of life.

- Builds up the ''to persevere'' spirit that could train a person to ''fight'' the many battles in life.

- Teaches or occupies troubled youths, teenagers in some countries, enables them to stay clear of bad addictions such as drugs and cigarettes.

GP + Econs

There are a few students who need some help with Econs as well as GP.

I can explain several terms and concepts in Econs too so we could have a formal GP lesson and have an Econs discussion at the sidelines. No problems at all.

Thanks.

What Students Need Help In

Some students feel that they need help in beefing up their content skills while others lack in the area of English. Some also struggle with structuring an essay or AQ.

From my experience, it is the second and third points above that usually bother students. Of course, some need help in content too. What is your main problem?
