Many are of the view that the main reason behind a country being stuck in poverty is because of a corrupt, ineffective, uncaring government. Many feel that even if a country which is rich in resources can be classified as poor if there are leaders who do not know how or do not want to properly manage the country.

Re: Censorship

Some examples of Censorship which took place over the past few years include:

- a 2005 ban on the content of the script for a play, Human Lefts, that meant a totally new one had to be put together within 3 days.

- a 2007 performance about a possible MRT bombing, where organisers were told a day before the scheduled opening that the authorities had deemed it inappropriate to be shown outdoors (it eventually opened a month later, within a covered tent).

General Paper Resources

Japan's Detention Of A Chinese Fishing Boat Captain.

On the surface, this looks like an incident that can be solved diplomatically. However, when it involves countries that have a bad history between each other spanning back years ago, sensitivities are high.

While Japan continues to hold the Chinese Fishing Boat Captain in detention, the Chinese government has taken action to show its protest over the issue. Bi-lateral relations are deeply affected and Chinese tourists have even cancelled their planned visits to Japan.

This is an example of how political issues can spill over into economic and social issues.

Regulation Examples

Licences are sort of a form of Regulation. Some examples of service industries that are regulated are the Real Estate Industry and the Food & Beverage Industry.

However, as pets become more and more of a common sight in many countries including Singapore, pet shop owners and pet farms have to fulfill one more requirement in order to renew their licences, that is to attend a mandatory course related to pet care.

Election Results From Australia

Julia Gillard and her Labour Party have managed to secure the support of the majority of the independent MPs to have a very very slight edge over the opposition party in terms of the no of seats required to finally form government in Australia after elections there took place over 2 weeks ago.

Now, it is time for them to show the people of Australia whether or not they can fulfill the promises that they have made before the elections.

History has shown that politicians often fail in carrying out all of their pre-election promises. Let's hope that they live up to expectations this time round.

GP Essay Question - Continued

Like most things in life, there are advantages and disadvantages associated. The below question regarding foreigners is no exception, they bring both benefits as well as problems to society.

Foreigners include migrants, business people, workers, tourists, students etc.

Some say that possible benefits could be:

- Business, economic & employment opportunities with them and their respective countries,

- Social & Cultural knowledge that can be learned or picked up from them,

- Enhance the country's reputation as a cosmopolitan and advanced nation, on par with cities such as London, New York, Sydney etc.

Some say that possible problems could be:

- Disintegration of society. Certain groups of people mixing only with their ''own people'',

- Social issues like crime may increase,

- Lost of the country's original identity.
